Tradition and History

With pioneering spirit, courage and a drive to move forward – BENTELER has developed from a small ironmonger's shop to a global company in about 140-years of success.

1876: Carl Benteler opens iron-mongery store in Bielefeld.

1916: Engineering plant purchased in Bielefeld.

1918: First production of drawn tubes.

1922: BENTELER-Werke Aktiengesellschaft founded.

1935: First order handled for the automotive industry.

1947: Production built back up again.

1952: Start of production of own compact car, the Champion.

1955: Production of own steel for the first time.

1957: First tube and steel warehouse founded in Berlin

1974: New electric steel mill goes into operation in Lingen (Ems)

1977: First axle production at the Paderborn plant

1980: First automotive plant in the USA

1986: First major contract with Adam Opel AG: Production of the rear axle and two suspension arms for the Opel Omega

1991: Specialization in prefinished components and just-in-time supply

1999: Restructured to become a holding company

2007: BENTELER Steel/Tube acquires the Rothrist Group.

2009: BENTELER Automotive acquires Norsk Hydro (automotive sector); BENTELER SGL acquires Fischer Composite Technology.

2010: BENTELER Automotive takes over a press shop in Puebla, Mexico, which now operates under the name BENTELER Puebla Stamping.

2010: Effective July 1, 2010, the newly founded BENTELER International AG, with headquarters in Salzburg, Austria, supplements the structure of the BENTELER-Group. The strategic management functions of the corporation are now concentrated in this holding company.

2011: Set-up of new plants in China and Turkey and the expansion of existing plants in Russia, India and South Africa.

2011: Most of all purchasing activities of the BENTELER-Group are centralized in an independent corporation, the BENTELER Global Procurement GmbH, located in Paderborn.

2012: BENTELER Automobiltechnik GmbH takes over the Norwegian company Farsund Aluminium Casting AS (FAC). FAC is a supplier of aluminum low-pressure die castings for the automotive industry.

2015: BENTELER Steel/Tube opens its first US-based tube plant in Shreveport, Louisiana. Therewith BENTELER has secured a place as an international partner on the market for steel tubes.

2016: BENTELER Distribution opens a modern central warehouse in Duisburg, including Europe‘s biggest high rack storing area for tubes.

2016: BENTELER Automotive celebrates opening of its 10th plant in region Asia/Pacific.

2016: BENTELER Automotive is continuing to invest in the growth market of Eastern Europe and opens its first plant in Poland. At this new plant in Września near Poznań, front-end and chassis modules will be produced from individual components.

2016: Sale of the BENTELER Engineering Services

2017: New Executive Board: Ralf Göttel appointed as CEO. Guido Huppertz becomes CFO. Isabel Diaz Rohr continues to be Member of the Executive Board.
