Sustainability at BENTELER: From green electricity to social engagement – our global path to net zero
Paderborn, July, 21st. Sustainability is an integral part of BENTELER's corporate strategy. Step by step, we are reducing emissions, improving energy efficiency, and taking responsibility for the environment, society, and the future.
One key area of action is the consistent conversion of our plants to green electricity. Already today, more than 70% of our 67 locations worldwide are powered entirely by electricity from renewable sources. In 2024 alone, this enabled us to save around 320,000 tons of CO₂ compared to 2019 – significantly more than we had planned for this point in time.
Three ways to achieve an emission-free energy supply
BENTELER uses three key sources of green electricity to systematically reduce its Scope 2 emissions:
• Guarantees of origin, which we use to verify that the electricity in the grid comes from renewable sources.
• On-site solutions such as photovoltaic systems at locations in Europe, Asia, and South America,
• Power purchase agreements (PPA) with energy suppliers to secure sustainable electricity volumes in the long term.
These three approaches now cover over 200 gigawatt hours per year – equivalent to around 20% of our global electricity requirements.
Sustainability in everyday life – visible worldwide
Our responsibility does not end with energy supply. Our plants implement locally effective measures – technologically innovative, socially committed, and ecologically effective. Here are a few examples:
• Chrastava, Czech Republic: The new LED hall lighting with intelligent control reduces energy consumption by over 50 percent while improving the working environment.
• Campinas, Brazil: Solar-powered light poles illuminate the outdoor area and save around 3,780 kWh of electricity annually.
• Paderborn Talle, Germany: Four new charging stations with eight charging points promote sustainable mobility for employees.
• Pune, India: A joint project with the BAIF Institute supports rural regions with solar energy and biogas plants. Over 100 families benefit from sustainable technology, better incomes, and new jobs—especially for women and young people.
Sustainability as a driver of innovation
At BENTELER, we also focus on sustainable solutions beyond production: With intelligent lightweight construction, emission-free mobility, and sustainable materials such as our steel product CliMore®, we are shaping the future of industry and mobility.
