BENTELER heats up Schloss Neuhaus

Paderborn/Salzburg, January 16 2018 - Symbolic handshake: On Tuesday, Michael Dreier, mayor of Paderborn, and Dr. Andreas Hauger, CEO BENTELER Steel/Tube, announced a joint project: BENTELER Steel/Tube will make the waste heat generated by process furnaces in the Schloß Neuhaus location available to public buildings. BENTELER will invest approximately € 325,000 into infrastructure to export the generated heat and feed it into the district heating system of Paderborn. Starting in September 2018, this energy will be used to heat schools, gymnasiums, a municipal administrative building, a police station, the public indoor swimming pool and the castle that used to be the residence of the prince-bishop in Schloß Neuhaus.

"We have always combined economically efficient action and corporate responsibility.  That is why, for many years now, we have been so dedicated to helping the locations where we produce," explains Dr. Andreas Hauger, CEO BENTELER Steel/Tube. With 1,200 employees, the BENTELER plant in Schloß Neuhaus is the largest production site of the Division. Starting in fall, this project will cover half of the heating requirement of public facilities.

"This project shows once again how well businesses and our city's municipal administration work together for the benefit of the inhabitants of Paderborn," stressed mayor Michael Dreier. He also emphasized how glad he was that this close, long-term cooperation was generating added value for the largest district of Paderborn and, at the same time, helping protect the climate. After all, the project will reduce the CO2 emissions of all municipal buildings in Paderborn by approximately ten percent. "I would like to thank BENTELER for supplying this waste heat. Our public buildings can really use it! Everyone benefits from this project," says Michael Dreier.

The project is another important step in the climate protection plan of the city of Paderborn.
It will make even historical buildings like the castle fit for the future and ensure that they are operated in an eco-friendly manner. In late 2016, the city of Paderborn received the international European Energy Award (eea) for its dedication to municipal climate action.

Reducing environmental impact
BENTELER places great importance on sustainability. Not only does the company promote the continuous optimization of its own production processes, but it also implements numerous optimization measures in the areas of energy, emissions and water protection. For instance, highly modern waste water treatment systems are used at the Schloß Neuhaus location to reduce the environmental impact even more than legally required. BENTELER's actions are a significant contribution to environmental protection efforts.
